Pinewood is made from pine wood, which is particularly resin-rich (hence the name "pine"). This conifer accumulates a large amount of sap near the roots and at the forks of branches, naturally producing this high-quality, heavy, resin-soaked wood. This wood is split into two parts, and the resulting pinewood is ideal for use as tinder and kindling.

A pinewood can also be lit directly and used as a small torch. In the Middle Ages, pinewood was used for lighting in houses and cellars, as candles were an unaffordable luxury for the average person at that time.
